My Pretty Pony - (1981-1983)
My Pretty Pony was the line of toys that inspired the My Little Pony toyline. These ponies were giant (about 10 inches tall) hollow plastic animals with a small trigger under their chin. When the trigger was pulled back these ponies would wiggle their ears, flick their tail, and blink. Over time this mechanism can stop working or only partially work. These ponies are notorious for having coarse hair which is very hard to brush.
A division of Hasbro called Romper Room was the first company to produce the My Pretty Pony toy but later Hasbro itself took over production.

'Peachy' My Pretty Pony
Later in '81 or '82 a new version My Pretty Pony was introduced. This version was more brightly colored and actually resembles Peachy from the 'soon to be made' My Little Pony line.

'Peachy' My Pretty Pony This pony has a peach with pink hair and pink hearts as her symbol. Her box and later brown My Pretty Pony boxes would be redesigned to appear more like 'My Little Pony' boxes. This set came with a lavender blanket, western hat that could be tied on with a purple ribbon, a white ribbon, a yellow ribbon, and an aqua ribbon. She also had a purple brush and a purple comb. There may be another version of this pony who is yellow with pink hair, pink heart symbol, and white blazes on her forehead and legs.

My Pretty Pony and Beautiful Baby In 1983 for certain and possibly earlier My Pretty Pony was released with a 'baby' pony that looks remarkably like Butterscotch. This pony was a lot smaller, brightly colored, and apparently had a symbol. This was probably the last My Pretty Pony set produced because by this time My Little Pony was taking over the line. |
